The following comments of despair are from some who have signed "A Petition to the Food
and Drug Administration and GlaxoSmithKline to Return Lotronex to the Prescription Market"
"There has to be a way to bring Lotronex back. Why is Lotronex still off the market? Is Diarrhea-Predominant IBS
a joke to the FDA? I have been living with this miserable, painful, debilitating disease for too many years.Yes, for us that
suffer from Diarrhea- Predominant IBS Lotronex is a true "WONDERDRUG." It gave me the best 10 months in over 20
years.there is no way i am going to go on with this life, that is no life at all. If Lotronex is not made available again,
members of the FDA my death will be on your conscience!" "I am in the 10th grade and want to go to my
first prom this year but without lotronex I can hardly make it to school lots of days. Do I have to live like this the rest
of my life?" "I NEED IT BACK I HAVE NO LIFE WITHOUT IT I AM LOOSING TO MUCH WEIGHT I CANT LIVE LIKE THIS
THE PILL WAS MY ONLY SALVATION PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!" "life without it isn't worth contemplating"
My grandmother need it so we can go on another vacation together this summer. I love her very much and hate to see
her not be able to go anyplace. When she does she cries because she can't get to a bathroom in time and is so embarrased so
she just doesn't go anymore. She has no more lotronex and is very depressed. I worry about her." "I am
a high school student that never could go to any after school stuff until my doctor had me start taking lotronex. I finally
knew what it was like to be normal. I have been so depressed since I can't get lotronex anymore that i am now taking an antidepressenst
but it can not help me with the emergency diahria I have every day. I have to wear diapers again just to go to schooll and
i am 16 years old. I don't think this is right when ther is something I can take be like the other kids but the goverment
won't let my doctor give it to me. What do they know about how I feel?" "No other treatment works
for me, I'm not sure I want to live without it." "IBS runs in my family, there are 3 of us taking it and
we're all almost out. Do we have to turn to Doctor Kavorkian next?" "I read all the signature comments
on here and I'm another teenager that would like to have a life, go to school every day, go to ball games school dances and
proms. I can't do those things now because somebody has taken my Lotronex away from me along with my life. My grandmother
lived with this for 30 years, if I have to do that I'd rather not live at all." "I'll be out of my lotronex
soon and can not face the future without it. I am 71 years old so i guess i don't matter to those people." "I
did take it but now I don't have any more. I'm a high school senior and I'm scared to go to my prom or any of the graduation
things that are coming. I don't even know if I dare go to commencement. I don't know what to do with my life now."
"My wife did until last week. Now she has returned to her life of seclusion but it's worse than before lotronex
because now she knows what CAN be done to help her. I'm afraid for her, afraid to leave the house and go to work every day
while she sits here alone. Afraid of what I'll find when I come home at night. There's really no excuse for the events of
the past year. I was a supporter of Public Citizen but no more. They've gone too far and completely lost sight of what they
were organized for." "IBS is a miserable illness. It may not be life-threatening, but it is certainly
life-altering. Quality of life is severely diminished, resulting in depression, anxiety, anger, pain, and more. I can't tell
you how many times suicide crossed my mind due to this miserable illness. We need lotronex" "my fianci
is starting to talk about suicide because her supply of Lotronex is almost out. I am so enraged by the bureacratic bungling
that is going on I cannot express my anger." "Never thought I'd find anything that helped me. Lotronex
was the miracle I had been praying for. Suicide is the only alternative if it is not available soon. I am almost out."
petitiononline.com/LOTRONEX/petition.html
"Get Lotronex back ASAP because I cannot endure my wife having another nervous breakdown with on-going suicidal thoughts
& wishes." "It is the only medication on God's green earth that works. I hope and pray that it comes
back on the market. I don't know how I will make it through life when my prescription runs out."

I try to go to school every day, I am 16. Now that I do not have any more lotronex I can not always
go to school. My mother used to home school me because I could not leave the house so often. I wanted to go to a real school
so I could meet other kids and make more friends and go to dances. When I started public school last September it was great
because of Lotronex. I could be like all the other kids. Now I can't make it to school every day anymore. My new friends don't
know why and I am embarrassed to tell them. My Mother wants me to try Depends but I am 16 years old. I don't want to wear
diapers! Please help me."
"Without it life isn't worth living."
"A friend of mine used it with great success
and is terrified of going back to what her life was before Lotronex. She has honestly said she would rather die than
live like that again. I am frightened for her because I believe her."
"but i've been out since last december. my fiance left me two weeks ago because he said he
couldn't live the way i have to without lotronex. when we became engaged he knew i took it and why but just couldn't imagine
what it was like i guess. when he found out......he really couldn't handle it. now i take antidepressants, does that
make it better, big brother?"
"MY DAUGHTER DID. HER FIANCE JUST BROKE UP WITH HER A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO BECAUSE
HE JUST COULDN'T COPE WITH THE WAY SHE HAS TO LIVE WITHOUT LOTRONEX. SHE BECAME SUICIDAL AND IS NOW ON MEDICATIONS FOR
THAT. BUT I GUESS THAT'S OK TO TREAT HER MIND BUT NOT HER BODY! AS A MOTHER I DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS WHOLE THING. WHEN
YOU KNOW SOMETHING WILL WORK MAKE IT AVAILABLE! LET PEOPLE MAKE THEIR OWN CHOICES. WHEN DID WE BECOME SUCH A NATION OF
NITWITS?"
"I have a sister who desparately needs Lotronex. We almost lost her a few weeks ago when she became
suicidal. Please, please bring it back, she can't see any future for herself now."
"Please bring it back.
I can't stand to live like this."
"I just hope I live long enough to see it back on the market. right now I feel like
it would be a pleasure to die. At least I wouldn't be curled up half the time in pain and the other half in the bathroom.PLEASE
bring lotronex back!!!"
"my life might as well be over now. I have no more lotronex and am again housebound like so
many others here. How can this happen when so many other drugs for non-life threatening illnesses have killed and maimed and
are STILL on the market?"
"my mother needs it to live! She almost gets hysterical just thinking about what she might
have to go back to when she runs out of lotronex. Why is this drug being put under a microscope like this? There are plenty
of others that cause terrible life threatening problems and they don't get this kind of treatment. Why such a double standard?"
"My mother was ready to commit suicide before Lotronex was developed. It saved her life."
"BEST THING THAT
EVER HAPPENED TO ME! MY LIFE IS OVER WITHOUT IT!"
"A relative of mine took Lotronex until it was withdrawn from the
market with no adverse side effects. She has been devastated since it was withdrawn because she no longer enjoys her life.
The other members of her family, me included, are concerned that she may not live much longer because she is so scared that
the FDA and GlaxoSmithKline will not bring Lotronex back."
" I would rather die from that iscemic colitus everybody
is so worried about than live with no lotronex. Give me the freedom to choose my own fate."

Petition to the Food & Drug Administration and
GlaxoSmithKline to Return Lotronex to the Prescription Market
Hysteria is a powerful emotion. It leads to reactionary policy rather than cool minded, level headed, investigative
procedures. The FDA is playing politics with medicine resulting in despair and life threatening depression for millions of
women.
Writing to the FDA objecting to their role in the withdrawal of Lotronex from the market gained a response
"acknowledging the bombardment of letters and emails they received from women who objected to this action," i.e., "...Our
Center Director, Janet Woodcock MD, has written a letter responding to the overwhelming number of letters and emails we have
received since withdrawal of this product. You can read this letter, dated December 15, 2000 at: http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/infopage/lotronex/lotronex.htm
An excerpt from this letter states; ...the FDA is ready to work with Glaxo Wellcome, as with any sponsor, to develop risk
management plans to ensure appropriate patient access to medically important, effective drugs. Be assured that FDA is committed
to working with pharmaceutical sponsors to facilitate the development and availability of treatment options for patients with
IBS.
A call to the manufacturers of Lotronex, GlaxoWellcome, now GlaxoSmithKline, produced the information that the
recall of this product had elicited thousands of calls from women weeping because of the withdrawal of Lotronex from the market.
Women whose lives had been given back to them for a brief period of time and were now being snatched away once again. How
many of them will be contemplating suicide as the only alternative?
In a letter from GlaxoSmithKline they state: The
FDA asked us to come to a meeting on November 28th prepared to discuss the withdrawal of Lotronex. The FDA may not agree that
they asked us to withdraw Lotronex. At the meeting, GlaxoSmithKline suggested that Lotronex remain on the market while an
independent scientific review of the clinical data was conducted. The FDA declined. In addition, we presented alternative
plans to the FDA that we believed would adequately and effectively address potential risks with Lotronex, such as label modifications,
restricted distribution, on-going patient education, and a new clinical and epidemiological research. FDA disagreed as to
the adequacy of these programs therefore we were left with no other option other than to comply with their request for withdrawal.
We are deeply disappointed with the FDAs request.
Further inquiry has it that the difficulties arose from improper
prescribing by the physicians compounded by a lack of supervision by said physicians, exacerbated by the patients inability
or unwillingness to exercise awareness and/or take responsibility for her own body.
Constipation is not a condition
that can easily be ignored yet obviously was. Constipation to a life threatening level does not occur over the course of a
single day. The 450,000 prescriptions written during the 9 months Lotronex was on the market gives solid evidence to it's
need but also to the possibilities of irresponsibility on the part of some physicians. Because of those abuses 5 women tragically
died (3 directly attributed to Lotronex), 34 resulted in hospitalization without surgery, 10 required surgical procedures
and, 21 suffered serious constipation from Lotronex, according to FDA and GlaxoSmithKline figures. Compare these figures to
Viagra attributed deaths were 84 per month; Celebrex attributed deaths were 13.5 per month; and Lotronex attributed deaths
at 0.3 per month. Meanwhile the hundreds of thousands of women in the US, not to mention the millions throughout the world
(because GlaxoSmithKline has refused to release it to other markets based on their US FDA experience) have been denied their
right to a normal life.
The FDA blithely refers us ...to our health care professionals for alternative medications.
THERE ARE NO OTHER MEDICATIONS AVAILABLE that provide the benefits Lotronex does to those who suffer the excruciating pain,
humiliation and isolation of uncontrollable diarrhea pre-dominant IBS.
Those three women whose tragic deaths were
directly attributed to Lotronex, and the other 65 who suffered horrible side effects resulting in hospitalizations and surgery
were women who failed to take responsibility for their own bodies. They and their families paid the unhappy consequences.
Those side effects don't come on suddenly...forewarning was not only in the written word of the package information but they
were alerted to the damaging effects by their own bodies and chose to ignore them.
Sympathy is hard to find in those
who once again are housebound, restricted to going only to places with quick and easy access to restrooms; reduced to taking
sponge baths and washing out their garments in toilets in public restrooms; leaving soiled underwear wrapped in paper towels
in trash cans; and trying to walk with their backs to the wall so nobody will notice the feces stains on their clothing before
they can get to their car. Then there are the experiences in the car when they cannot even get to a rest area or gas station
or fast food restroom in time; suffering excruciating abdominal cramping so severe as to render their driving unsafe, ending
up sitting in a seat full of hot feces that actually creates burns on the tender tissue of the vagina. No...this is not a
mentally sick, distorted message meant to disgust you but a true account of what women with the diarrhea version of IBS suffer
with on a daily basis!
GlaxoSmithKline complied with every request made by the FDA until it reached the issue of requiring
GlaxoSmithKline to police the physicians prescribing Lotronex. That is the job of the FDA and each individual States medical
policing organization. They are set up for that purpose, pharmaceutical companies are not. The monitoring of narcotic containing
prescriptions has been done for decades by these agencies, why not do the same for Lotronex?
Please sign this petition
to Return Lotronex to the Prescription Market and support those whose lives are once again in shreds.
